It’s been hard to find ways to come together as a community during the pandemic. It’s even been hard to find excuses to go outside! Through the Beautiful Stuff Project, Connection Lab has led the community in creating three mosaic story walks during the pandemic. Storywalks are a way to display pages of a story outdoors, along a fence or along a trail, so that readers have to move from one page to another. They’re a wonderful way to decorate a space, and they also introduce literacy opportunities to playgrounds and open spaces. These Storywalks promote literacy, provide an excuse to go outside, and are completely frost-proof, so they can last much longer than laminated pages. The three original stories were mosaiced by hundreds of community members, and “Sweet Colors” was written by members of the Somerville Public Library’s West branch Kids’ Book Club!
