In partnership with the school’s art teacher, the Beautiful Stuff Project and Groundwork Somerville, Connection Lab and the Argenziano School art club worked all year to make garden pavers inspired by Georgia O’Keefe. At the end of the year the Groundwork Somerville Green Team mounted the mosaics on cement pavers, grouted them, and got them ready to install in the gardens. The pavers should give students working in the garden a place to stand as they plant, weed and harvest. Until now they’ve been stepping on the plants. Not only will the pavers be useful, but they’ll also be beautiful.
After so many fun mosaic projects with young students and teens this year, I like the idea that soon Somerville youth will be ready to tile bathrooms, floors, and any other indoor or outdoor space that they want to tackle. It’s unintentional job training!
