On Saturday I had a wonderful day at the mobile market, a farmers market that sets up at two different housing developments to provide inexpensive fresh fruits and vegetables in neighborhoods where affordable produce can be hard to find.  I was there to do craft activities with kids as an extra incentive for families to visit the market.  We did two fun projects, newspaper seed pots and a vegetable mosaic.  We made seed pots out of newspaper and planted peas in a compost mix donated by Groundwork Somerville.  Kids then painted their pots with pictures of healthy food.  I had an enthusiastic assistant who’s interested in early literacy, and she used the activity to encourage kids to name foods, think about the letters in them and to express their ideas out loud while they painted.

We also began a mosaic of vegetables.  Once it’s complete it might be a nice sign for to mobile market to hang near their tents for the rest of the growing season.
